Lesson 2- Infection control

METHOD OF INFECTION CONTROL

Cleaning – Removal of visible debris from an environment or surface. This is most often accomplished using soap and water and is an essential step prior to disinfecting or sterilizing.

Sanitation – Lowering the presence of germs on surfaces or objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards. This process usually involves chemically cleaning surfaces or environments to lower the risk of spreading infection.

Disinfection – Chemical process that eliminates most microorganisms on non-living surfaces and environments. Disinfectants are chemical products that destroy bacteria, fungi and viruses (but not bacterial spores).

Sterilization – A process that destroys all microbial life, including bacterial spores. Sterilization is accomplished by using a medical autoclave device or chemical that destroys all potentially dangerous organisms.

Using barrier consumables – PPE (gloves, aprons) for protection against blood borne viruses (BBV) and MRSA.

Personal protective equipment also known as PPE is important for individuals working in a beauty salon for their safety and health as well as client protection. Therapists must know the consequences when clients have not received adequate protection during salon services. The clients have possible grounds to sue or claim against the salon for negligence.

There are different kinds of personal protective equipment.

·         Masks and face shields

·         Hand gloves

·         Protecting clothing/ apron and footwear

·         Eye protection
