Lesson 1: Consultation

Microblading consultation is an important step to find out important information that will allow you to advise and provide the best treatment for the client.

The information you need to gather in this consultation is:

  1. Skin type
  2. Skin conditions
  3. Skin tones- or the pigmentation content in the skin
  4. Recent skin treatments
  5. Last but not least is client desire and preference for shapes and colours

Skin types:

Normal: an even balance of oil and water secretions, skin is soft, supple and elastic, no imperfections and pores are small with even colour.

Dry: a matt and uneven texture, lacking in oil/sebum, flaky and dull, often lacking in moisture, feels tight, lacks suppleness and may have dilated capillaries, prone to sensitivity and premature ageing.

Oily: overproduction of sebum, surface is shiny, thick and coarse, prone to open pores, pustules and papules, sallow colour.

Combination: what’s most common is an oily t-zone with normal/dry cheeks, but it can be a combination of all.

Skin conditions:

Sensitive: high colouring, dilated capillaries, flushes easily, tends to be warm to the touch.

Dehydrated: lacks the ability to retain water in the tissues, looks dull, may feel tight and itchy, fine lines are visible.

Mature: skin lacking in oil due to hormonal changes, skin loses firmness and begins to drop, becomes lined and crepe-like.

Congested skin: lumpy, uneven texture, papules, pustules are present, build-up of dead skin cells.

Pigmentation content in the skin:

Caucasian: more prone to premature ageing from sun damage, due to small melanin granules, has visible dilated capillaries and pigmentation irregularities, scarring leaves pink marks.

Oriental skin: tends to have smooth, even tone, pigmentation can result from UV exposure, has yellow undertones, and tends to be oily, ages slowly.

Asian skin: prone to uneven pigmentation, scarring leaves dark marks, tends to be hairier.

Black skin: melanin granules are largest, so ages the slowest from UV influences. Sweat and sebaceous glands are larger and there are more of them, scarring leaves dark pigmentation, also prone to keloid scarring.

Mixed skin: a combination of any of the characteristics mentioned, will inherit the sensitivities and conditions of their family.

Recent skin treatment:

  1. Skin texture, pigmentation and tone improvement treatments: using Retin A , Retinol, Tretinoin, Vitamin A. All these chemicals can thin the skin which increases the risk of scarring and delay healing. Clients must stop using those creams from 2-4 weeks  ( depending how often they have the treatments)  before any PMU treatments and 4 weeks after PMU to resume the skin treatments.
  2. Skin peels using chemical peels with AHA’s, Glycolic acid, Lactic acids, TCA peels, laser peel: Clients must wait from 2 to 4 weeks before treatments, or until there is no sign of redness.
  3. Skin tanning using Sunbed: no sunbed for 2 weeks before and after PMU treatments, and clients are advised to use a strong sunblock over the treatment.

Sunbed regular users are not an ideal candidate for PMU treatments as long term usage will have a negative impact on the pigment retention and colour’s stability.

Once we gather all the necessary informations , we will then determine a colour and style for a suitable Microblading/ PMU treatment using
